Since 2022
In 2022 Acumen invested in Kurasa on a teacher-first thesis: if African classrooms are going to improve, the person in the room has to be supported — not only given more content.
Their public note described a Kenyan company, started by brothers William Nguru and Daniel Warui, that had already pivoted from Ziada — a lockdown online school — into software for CBC planning and assessment. The bet was that teachers who can see learning gaps, prepare assessments without losing the week, and talk to parents from a living record will change what children actually learn.
iHub Kenya · 2024
In 2024 Kurasa joined the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship’s Kenya cohort, run with iHub. The fellowship backs African companies working on classroom problems at K–12 — not demo days for content libraries.
Kurasa was one of twelve Kenyan startups in that cohort. The film below is the iHub impact video from the fellowship: teachers, classrooms and the work the product is actually asked to do.
Evidence · 2023–2024
EdTech Hub featured Kurasa in 2023 among practitioners who treat evidence as part of building a product, not a report written afterwards. William Nguru presented how the platform scaffolds CBC assessment so teachers can see learner outcomes in time to teach differently.
That work continued in Kirinyaga County in 2023 and 2024: foundational learning evidence, generated with Brink and the Jacobs Foundation, in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission. The findings helped take Kurasa into public schools.
