Grade 8 Mathematics Contest: A Triumph at Acacia Crest School, Kitengela

This past Saturday 13th July, 2024, the halls of Acacia Crest School in Kitengela buzzed with excitement and intellectual fervor as we hosted a remarkable Grade 8 Mathematics Contest. This event, organized by Kurasa, was a testament to the enthusiasm and dedication of our young mathematicians, their teachers, and the entire school community. The contest was a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to foster a deeper appreciation for mathematics and to highlight the importance of competency-based education in Kenya.

Setting the Stage

The morning sun rose over Kitengela, casting a warm glow on the picturesque grounds of Acacia Crest School. The preparations for the contest had been meticulous, with classrooms transformed into competitive arenas and the school hall adorned with banners celebrating the spirit of learning and competition. Teachers and staff members were on hand to ensure that every detail was perfect, from the seating arrangements to the provision of necessary materials.

The Contest Begins

The contest kicked off at 9 AM with a brief opening ceremony. The Head Teacher of Acacia Crest School, Mr. Gideon Mutonya, welcomed the participants, teachers, and parents, emphasizing the importance of such events in promoting academic excellence and nurturing young talents. His words resonated with the audience, setting a tone of seriousness and excitement for the day ahead.

Our very own representative from Kurasa, Mr Ken Mugambi, also took the stage to share a few words. He highlighted Kurasa’s mission to support teachers and students through innovative tools and platforms that enhance learning experiences. Mr. Mugambi expressed his delight at the overwhelming participation and commended the students for their hard work and dedication.

The Competition

The contest comprised a series of challenging mathematics problems designed to test the students’ understanding, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Divided into several rounds, the questions covered a broad spectrum of topics, including algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and logical reasoning. The intensity of the competition was palpable, as students furrowed their brows in concentration and scribbled furiously on their answer sheets.

One of the unique aspects of this contest was the inclusion of collaborative problem-solving sessions. Students were grouped into teams and tasked with solving complex problems together, fostering a spirit of teamwork and collective intelligence. Awards and Recognition

As the contest drew to a close, the anticipation for the results reached its peak. The judges, comprising experienced mathematics educators and professionals, took their time to meticulously evaluate the answer sheets. Finally, the moment arrived to announce the winners.

  1. Top Performers: The top three students received medals and certificates of excellence. Their names were announced amidst loud applause, and they proudly took to the stage to receive their awards from Ms. Nancy Nui, the Guest of Honor.
  2. Special Awards: Special recognition was given to teams that excelled in the collaborative rounds. These awards highlighted the importance of teamwork and the collective effort of the students. The top three schools were: Position 1White Star Schools, Position 2- Mountain View School and Position 3- Acacia Crest Schools.
  3. Participation Certificates: Every participant and teacher received a certificate of participation, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. These certificates serve as a reminder of their achievements and an encouragement to continue pursuing excellence in mathematics.

Closing Remarks

The closing ceremony was a moment of reflection and celebration. Mr. Gideon expressed his gratitude to Kurasa for organizing such a successful event and reiterated the school’s commitment to supporting similar initiatives in the future. Mr. Ken Mugambi thanked Acacia Crest School for their hospitality and applauded the students for their outstanding performances.
