Track syllabus coverage without more paperwork

A short, regular check of what has been taught against what was planned helps leaders support teachers before assessments, not after.

Syllabus coverage tells a school how much of the planned curriculum has been taught. It is one of the clearest signals a head teacher or deputy has about whether learners are ready for assessments. It is useful only if it is checked regularly, compared with the plan and followed by a conversation about support.

What to compare

  • The scheme of work: what each class was meant to cover by this week.
  • The record of work covered: what was actually taught.
  • Assessment dates: how many weeks remain before each assessment.
  • Gaps by class and learning area, so patterns are visible.

A monthly routine

  • Agree the day each month when records are reviewed.
  • Check that records are up to date before drawing conclusions.
  • List the classes and learning areas that are behind and ask what is in the way.
  • Agree one support action for each, with a name and a date.
  • Return to the list at the next review.

Questions for the conversation

  • What slowed this strand down: time, resources, learner readiness or absence?
  • Do learners need revision before this topic is assessed?
  • Does the plan for the remaining weeks need to change?
  • What help would make the next three weeks easier?

Read a gap as a question, not a verdict

A class that is behind may have had interruptions, long absence or a difficult strand. Ask first, and use the answer to decide whether to adjust the plan, add revision time or provide support.
