KPSEA and KJSEA sit on top of a year of school-based evidence
Under CBC, a cohort is assessed all year — quizzes, projects, observation — not only on the day a national paper lands. KPSEA at Grade 6 and KJSEA at Grade 9 are the public sittings that sit on top of that record. The school still holds the year.
Practical teaching guide, updated September 2026. Use the examples to discuss lesson preparation, classroom observations and follow-up with your teaching team.
Kurasa does not write KPSEA or KJSEA papers and does not forge KNEC marks. Pathway placement rules move. Date any policy sentence.
What KPSEA and KJSEA stand for
KPSEA stands for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment, taken at the end of primary school in Grade 6. KJSEA stands for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment, taken at the end of junior school in Grade 9. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) manages both. Each sits on top of school-based assessment carried out through the year.
Two clocks
School-based assessment is low-stakes and frequent. The point is to see who is still emerging on a strand while there is time to reteach. KPSEA and KJSEA are national cohort assessments at the end of a phase. Mixing those clocks — treating a Workspace formative as if it were KNEC — is how a teacher tool becomes a rumour.
What Workspace is for
Workspace keeps the weekday: plans, attendance, formative marks against curriculum indicators. PSL Summative is a separate programme sitting, not a substitute for KPSEA. If a school wants a picture of reasoning under timed conditions, that is PSL. If a school wants the year on the page before a transition, that is formative work, closed while the lesson is still warm.
Preparing for the national assessment
Keep lesson plans, classroom observations and assessment records throughout the year. Families can use those records to discuss practice and support, while KNEC provides the official national assessment requirements.

The two products
Hold the year. Sit the paper that is actually yours.
Formative assessment is the weekday. PSL Summative is a programme sitting. KPSEA and KJSEA remain KNEC’s.
