Who can use this feature
Use your own signed-in account. Academy can be used without joining a school. Your professional profile belongs to your account; school records and school access remain separate.
Before you start
Have your teaching subjects and grades ready. You can explore without a school membership; a school invitation or code is needed separately to join that school.
Required and optional fields
| Field | Requirement | Format or example | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role, teaching subjects and grades | Required when applicable | A role is needed to Continue. On the Teaching step, Continue needs at least one subject and grade; Skip for now is available. County is recommended and school is optional. Selecting a school here does not join its workspace. | Your account, current selections and the available saved source records. |
Picklist prerequisites
| Choice | Options come from | Earlier selection | If missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggested groups, teachers and plans | The available Academy catalogue and your role, subject, grade and location choices. | Complete or review the earlier selections. The current county suggestions use Kenya’s counties; use only an applicable option and do not assume every country has a local list. | Change or clear narrow filters and check loading. An empty suggestion list does not prevent using Academy without a school; return when relevant material is available. |
Desktop walkthrough
Choose your role and review location preferences.
Screen walkthrough · 0:45Download GIF ↓- Open Account home through Switch workspace, then choose Set up Academy or Open Academy. For a new setup, choose your role; school leaders and parents may be directed to their separate joining paths.
- Review Location. Choose an applicable county if offered and optionally identify a school. These preferences do not create or join a school workspace.
- On Teaching, select subjects and grades, then Continue, or Skip for now. These selections can update your profile’s learning areas while keeping its current visibility.
- Review suggested groups and remove those that are not useful. Continue to First plans; check each plan’s grade, subject and curriculum before saving or adapting it.
- Return through Open Academy or the first-week checklist. Follow teachers, share or join groups only when you intend that action. A checklist records your practice steps; it is not a qualification or proof of teaching.

Troubleshooting
Continue is disabled or suggestions do not match
Select a role first. On Teaching, choose both a subject and a grade or use Skip for now. Recheck location and filters; do not select an unrelated school or country just to fill the list.
