If a child cannot read with understanding or hold basic number, every later competency is theatre. EdTech is useful when it helps a teacher see that floor early and change the group. It is not useful as a catalogue of games, VR and apps.
Rewritten from a 26 May 2023 essay. World Bank learning-poverty figures cited there belong to that year’s public datasets, not to Kurasa’s ledgers. Formative assessment is the part of the argument that still sits in Workspace.
The 2023 original cited World Bank reading-with-understanding figures for sub-Saharan Africa and a Khan Academy study in Kenya. Those citations stay in 2023. This rewrite will not restyle them as Kurasa results, and will not repeat a third-party efficacy claim we have not re-checked.
Foundational literacy and numeracy are not a phase you skip because CBC has projects. They are the condition for the projects. Rote drill without understanding was the method many of us inherited. It does not hold.
Identify who is struggling. Track whether the reteach landed. Tell the learner what to practise. That loop can live on paper. On Kurasa it lives as formative evidence against indicators, in time for Monday. M-learning matters where there is no lab. A gadget list — VR, generic game-based learning, a named overseas academy — is not this product’s proof.
World Bank learning-poverty numbers move as datasets are updated. Quote them with a year, or do not quote them. 60 Decibels academics and participation figures are teacher-reported, Kenya, March 2024, on their own posts. Do not flatten Africa into one gap and one app.
