From Kurasa 1.0 to Workspace 2.0: what changed (and why)

In 2021–2022, Kurasa 1.0 was built around schools, not teachers. One account per school. The headteacher owned it. It seemed logical. It was wrong.

What we got wrong

Teachers do not work for headteachers’ software. They work for themselves. Parents work for their families, not for institutions. If you want people to adopt software, it cannot require institutional gatekeeping. It needs the same friction-free signup as WhatsApp: you sign up for yourself, invite others, and create a space together.

The 2023 rebuild: Workspace 2.0

We spent late 2022 and early 2023 rebuilding from scratch. Teachers create accounts as individuals. Parents create accounts as individuals. Admin creates an account. A school is a workspace that collects those accounts.

That meant a teacher could be both a teacher and a parent. A parent could connect to more than one school. A teacher could move schools without losing their account. No institutional bottleneck.

Adoption did not change overnight. But self-registration ticked up. Teachers invited other teachers. Parents started creating accounts without a sales person calling them. By 2026 we had 22,000+ self-registered users — most never contacted by Kurasa directly.

Why this matters

Most edtech in Africa is built top-down. Ministry rolls out, schools must adopt, teachers are told to use it. Adoption is slow. Utilization is lower. Workspace 2.0 was built bottom-up. Teachers choose it. Teachers tell other teachers. It spreads like WhatsApp, not like a ministry mandate.

What is next

We spent 2024–2026 doubling down on what teachers want from Workspace, and we built PSL Daily Challenge on the same principle: parents want it. They do not need a school to offer it. They download and subscribe. That is growth. That is sustainable.
