Shule ni Mwalimu: the classroom has to hold the record

The phrase

In Kiswahili the sentence is ordinary. The school is the teacher. Not the ministry portal. Not the content library. Not the inspectorate file, useful as that file is when a regulator asks for it. The school is the adult in the room on a Monday morning, with a scheme that has to survive first period.

Kurasa started as Ziada, a lockdown online school. The product that followed was teacher-first on purpose. Acumen’s 2022 note said the same thing in funder language: if African classrooms are going to improve, the person in the room has to be supported — not only given more content. We still write it in the language of the staffroom.

Not a dashboard

A lot of education software is built as if the interesting user is someone far from the lesson: a county officer, a donor, a national dashboard. Those people need a picture. They should not be the first picture. If the teacher cannot mark attendance, close formative evidence and see which learners are still emerging on a strand, the roll-up is theatre.

That is why Workspace is one school at a time. Setup is supposed to take a maximum of thirty minutes for schoolwide data. Each teacher then owns their own account. A school-appointed ICT lead stays for the messy bits. We do not “digitise the school for you” and leave a login nobody opens on Tuesday.

Plan, teach, assess

The operating model is Plan–Teach–Assess. It is not a parent-teacher association. Every allocated class and learning area is supposed to be planned, taught as a recorded session, then formatively assessed against curriculum indicators. The lesson is not where you invent the week. Stanley Kago said it on camera in 2023: the game is won in the planning.

Kurasa does not replace official CBC documents. It helps a teacher work with the curriculum. Lesson plans, formative work, summative tests, rubrics and reports sit around CBC; other curricula are supported too. The software is a page for the lesson, the register and the child — kurasa — not a second syllabus.

The Monday morning test

Everything we ship has to survive a Monday morning in a real classroom. Limited connectivity. A worn Android tablet. A scheme that was finished after supper. If a programme cannot sit inside that week, it is a tent: useful for a launch, gone by week four.

Parents are part of the same test. They should not wait for closing day. Guardian accounts, a weekly picture, five CBC questions after supper — those are Connect, not a second timetable. Governments and partners come later, on the same evidence trail, not on a parallel project.

What we will not do

We will not mix the 2023 snapshot (20,000 learners, 42 schools, 17 counties) with the 29 August 2026 homepage counts (6,000+ teachers, 150k learners, 10M+ formative assessments). We will not fold Daily Challenge plays or PSL summative scores into that 10M. We will not write KISEL as if Ghana’s licensing file already went live. We will not name a school, a chair or a contest result without written clearance.

The argument is older than the figures. If the classroom does not hold the record, nobody else is holding anything real.
