1:27by having kcd invite us into the space and so allow me to bring the tari our
1:36boa to start with his remarks this morning my name is Joseph wambua the kind of work that is being done by
1:45kurasa is dear to me the platform they are using have already interacted with it and I'm seeing a lot of points of
1:53convergence areas that we can come together and see how to move forward as a team for the benefit of the Kenyan children for any
2:01education system for any Education and Training framework there are four things
2:08that must be there one is curriculum content two there must be assessment three there must be the pedagogical
2:17approaches four there must be the learning resources and on pedagogical approaches in this dispensation of CBC
2:25we are emphasizing on the constructivists approaches to learning

2:54if we do assessments and of course it came from the experiment of Assessments that we were doing every day
3:03in the school and a lot of experimenting we've done we figured that if we start doing these assessments it's going to work out and that's actually
3:11now was the shift from ziada to the now kurasa
3:18so for any signed up clients that we have and they they bought into the Dream It's a first time for everything and all
3:27of you can remember the first time you did the first time you drove your car the first time you went to school you know the first time you do something
3:34sets you on a path that changes your life forever and what I'm here to cover is our journey and the
3:43first time we did some of these things and that's what actually has brought this this is our first event uh first
3:50annual report event and this is setting us up you know in a certain path that we'll always recall and come back to
3:58this foreign
4:06capacity development organization Tech organization I forgot
4:14to add the tank and we are here this morning to Tech education very proud
4:21especially to have parents sitting in the house to celebrate the combination of engineering Tech and
4:30education and therefore we are taking education um so this morning I would like to talk
4:38about taking up education in Kenya and just Daniel this guy is no longer the limit we realize there's something about the sky so we no longer limit ourselves
4:46at the sky yeah so we're going up there
4:54[Music]
4:57I'm finding the life of our teachers is a bit easier when a class teacher is giving feedback to a parent
5:05or to a set of parents you would think that child has been cloned because the feedback from parent a to
5:12parent b c d e would be the same and the teachers would use words like your child is good and your child is
5:21fair because we're Kenyan also and the Kenyan culture is not extreme if it's good we'll tell you if it's bad
5:30too isn't it so the fact that we have a record
5:38an apparent comes in and they leave knowing that the individual that was described in that session
5:46is my child is a very big win for my school

6:16having platforms uh like and that's really what we are doing at kurasa is now putting all of these people on One
6:24platform uh putting the information that matters which is the information about the Lana and also cleverly helping the
6:33teacher with the work that they need to do so it's like a towards word you're helping the teacher with the work you're helping making the work easier
6:41administrators are happier because they have more visibility and at the same time using that information because it pertains to the children to engage the
6:50parents remember I remember in the advert where parents don't have to wait for the time to end for them to get one
6:59of these books which has just been filled a day before so these books are mostly filled a day prior and then you
7:07get it to the parents and now they can't make a judgment and if you look at it even from value for money they already paid school fees there's no opportunity
7:15for them to have any remedial activity for whatever is in that great book so that's the reason I think I
7:23advocate for solutions for me it's a teacher focused for learner-centered
7:30because I think the teachers have a lot of role in guiding and in parking Within
7:37These classrooms with these Learners and they have that opportunity in the now like I said this is a report of a bit of
7:45what I have presented it contains everything that we have achieved to 2023 and our aim is that each one of you
7:53today get a copy and we'll also share digital copy on the WhatsApp channel that has been I think or if you did the
8:00trivia you should have gotten the link to subscribe so a physical copy will be present you will be free to share it
8:08with your school with your other stakeholders who may not have come today

8:17I am privileged to be here in probably two capacities one is as you can see here I represent
8:25edtech East Africa which is a ecosystem Builder we bring together members of the edtech community here in Kenya but also
8:34across the region through Partnerships we focus on providing support to innovators those who are entrepreneurs
8:41but also Innovative practitioners in communities as well as all of the enablers so those are our partners in
8:48governments funders researchers media and others who helped us tell the stories of the amazing work that's
8:56happening in education technology in Kenya and so the World Bank The Gates
9:02Foundation UK Aid and UNICEF created a collaborative of organizations who helped to generate that evidence and I
9:10helped to organize all of that evidence generation and the use of that evidence by our partners in development and
9:17government here in Kenya so again I'm very privileged to be a part of of this discussion and and underpinning both of
9:25those kind of pieces of work that I do are two principles and I just want to share a little bit about and celebrate
9:33karasa for living those two principles
9:41I guarantee you today I know private schools into Canada that have a lot of technology and are deploying a lot of Technology
9:50in their processes and in their learning I know schools that are teaching music without a music teacher
9:58I now know of two schools that are teaching art without a physical art teacher they are leveraging on communities and
10:06partnering with another school I know somewhere in emali where people teachers in makueni County somewhere I'd
10:15really rather drive it sits on the highway but it is one of the most disadvantaged places and I try to teach us who are about to register to teach a
10:23train foreign books that I did was in the year 2000.
10:3523 years ago but it has refused to go away how I wish
10:43the schools that we are leading the teaching that we are doing
10:47[Music]
10:48the values that we're inculcating refused to go away from our children
10:57and especially from our teachers under amapi kurasa has something to do with this I met krasa quite a while ago
11:04and there's somebody who's been holding my hand I think I still met kurasa through you Betty and Steve thank you very much
11:11and I liked kurasa my very personal person I met kurasa I liked him
11:18not because of the woodwork only that they were doing but I also preach boychild a lot of time
11:26and I love talking and I love talking to men and it is rare to see a company that is
11:34being led by two men and with a few other men around it and I kept on asking where is a chick
11:42where is a girl who has told them to come and talk and the woman she didn't appear and said these are my people
11:50and later on then we started working together and I can only congratulate you and you brought your father and mother here to
11:58shame us we also have children and I don't know whether I'll one day feel as proud as you're feeling
12:06but God you see that's all
12:11[Music]
12:19award for the the top teacher when it comes to kurasa utilization
12:25this is measured by how they formatively assess the records
12:33how they do their lesson planning how often they are engaging with parents and over and
12:42Beyond there how they engage with the community so this is someone who has gone beyond the call of just
12:49doing what they are supposed to do and they are championing that ideal teacher that we want to see the teacher who is
12:58in the community the teacher who is formatively participating with their classroom they are doing their lesson planning and
13:08this is a information that is collected and this is an algorithm that creates a point for teachers and in your report
13:17you will see the top 100 teachers who you will find that on page I think
13:24it's 14. you will see the top 100 teachers it's actually one-on-one because
13:31101 tied but the points are accumulated based on the activity and how they do the right
13:39thing
13:41[Music]
13:46I'll start with the expert award uh is
13:54the expert award so the person who we we picked as the expert for 2023
14:06has is a teacher in a public Primary School
14:14in lamu County assault region Asal region
14:23primary yeah please come
14:32so just to talk about what he has done
14:35[Applause]
14:37as you as you bring him here as you please stand to give the award I want to
14:44call our brother from all the way from Diego I forget
14:51please is going to give this faster word and here you go sir and we also have
14:59this certificate please go ahead and give the award very good
15:14thank you very very much
15:18[Music]
15:24and now and now to our teacher Award of the year
15:30two zeros two three
15:38[Applause]
15:42so we appreciate the way
15:49there you go tell us that we appreciate the work that Wendy does Wendy has taken
15:56the instill course she was part of the cohort one and she you know she that shows how interested
16:05she is in improving herself and also that commitment to being a
16:12better teacher is reflecting in the way that she performs her formative assessments which is uh very much on a timely basis
16:20she also has the highest points for performing lesson planning on the system and just to mention the points are 92.
16:3192 out of 100 is exceeds expectation in technology I can say we ahead
16:39besides which I interact with schools a lot I'm one of the proponents of CBC strongly
16:45and one of the proponents of outcome based learning and I just want to mention that I also pride in the fact that I was one of the first presenters
16:55on technology in education with the guests International in Dubai just before kovid three days before kovit I
17:04had made a presentation on technology and education and how one sometimes education would come to understand still
17:10because of several factors including climate change and why we needed to impress technology in education and at
17:19the moment I'm working and strongly on AI and technology in education I believe
17:27technology is very very important not only in education but in all aspects
17:34in life right now because everything is tending towards the tech side so implementing or having that major
17:43between in the old education system the analogue with and now bringing in Tech
17:50into it is very very important kurasa in particular helps schools in doing the assessments which
17:59are very very important these assessments can be very very tedious when done the analogue especially when
18:06you have a very big number of children that you're dealing with technology is a big deal uh because of
18:13if you look at CBC and what CBC is all about assessment assessment assessment from
18:21one learning area to another learning area so how do you assess all these learning areas with no technology
18:28how do you make the work of the teacher easy so that they can be able to assess it can only be through technology
18:37and what I've seen actually technology doing is that it's not a one-sided it is both the the teacher the
18:47learner and the the parent I think right now we need to be
18:54cognizant of the fact that our kids are already tech savvy so we need to also
19:01allow for for teachers to accept that our children already know technology so
19:09how can we leverage and make teaching interesting so that kids find education interest in learning interesting because
19:19the more we we continue with the road learning which unfortunately for some schools that's what they're still doing
19:27then we the kids find it boring so we sort of lose them so I think it's important for
19:33teachers to understand that they need to leverage on what is already existing and
19:41and make learning interesting for students schools it is inevitable from 2013 when the government ruled the
19:50digital learning progress it is a matter of when not if anymore schools should start small with what
19:57they have we should not let the bigger problems that we have hinder so there's a place for just you know a school
20:05management software and then you schools then take the next step up which is a a learning management software and then
20:12from there we have you know ecosystems full transformation of Education once we get there so this is a conversation that
20:20needs to be had and we need to talk how easy it is for schools to onboard go paperless by you know just using a
20:29school management software it begins to set the the building blocks for the digital transformation in education so
20:37this is a matter of when it is not a matter of if yes
