60 Decibels

NPS 40, and the 40% who hit a snag. What teachers asked us to fix.

Kurasa’s NPS in this sample is 40: 48% Promoters, 44% Passives, 8% Detractors. 60 Decibels calls that good. It also calls it lower than the education benchmark of 51. Both sentences belong here.

60 Decibels Lean Data Study, Kurasa Kenya, April 2024. Phone interviews with 208 teachers in Kenya, March 2024, in English and Kiswahili. Client population 991; response rate 52%; 95% confidence; margin of error ±5%. Sponsored by Acumen. Every figure on this page is teacher-reported. It is not the September 2026 homepage scale, and it is not the 2023 documentary snapshot.

This page is not a victory lap. 60 Decibels scored NPS in the bottom 40% of its education benchmark, and challenges in the bottom 20%. Citing the study means citing that too.

40 Net Promoter Score — good, below the 60 Decibels education benchmark of 51

48% Promoters (9–10)
44% Passives (7–8)
8% Detractors (0–6)

Among those who hit a snag

  1. of those with a challenge named technical difficulties 40%
  2. named network and connectivity 33%
  3. named data loss 25%

Promoters talked about time efficiency, a user-friendly interface and reduced paperwork. Passives still liked time efficiency, then asked for more features and offline functionality. Detractors — a small group — wanted a better interface and closer curriculum alignment.

Forty percent of teachers had experienced a challenge. That is a bottom-20% result on the same benchmark. Among them, 40% talked about technical difficulties, 33% about network, 25% about data loss. Their NPS was 15. Teachers who had not hit a snag sat at 57. Female teachers reported challenges slightly more often than male teachers.

The quotes are specific. A 24-year-old woman cannot open the platform without internet. A 31-year-old man had names drop off a register he had already uploaded. Those are product problems, not “change management.”

Passives asked for more features and offline use. Network is not a branding problem.

In their words

I am unable to access the platform whenever there is an issue with the internet connection as the platform needs internet for one to access it.

Female, 24 — 60 Decibels, March 2024

I have been losing data that I upload on the platform quite often like when it comes to calling the register I find that some students names are missing yet I had uploaded them.

Male, 31 — 60 Decibels, March 2024

The study’s own advice was to call back teachers who hit a snag. That work is not finished because a report exists.
